WINFIELD TWP — Two Republican candidates are vying for a six-year supervisor's seat.

There are no Democrats on the ballot.

Incumbent Matt Klabnik, 47, of Gerner Road is finishing his first term.

Klabnik said he first ran for office because he felt his experience living in other parts of the country while serving in the U.S. Air Force would be advantageous to the township.

“That has proved true and I want to continue my work modernizing the township government to position us for continued success,” Klabnik said.

His opponent, Karl Kruger, 55, of Brose Road, said he decided to run for supervisor to make a contribution.

“I have no agenda, just trying to get involved in the community,” Kruger said.

He manages a truck repair garage in Tarentum and lives in the township with his wife, Debra, and daughter, Michaela, 21.

Kruger would like to see the township do more hiring within the community.

Klabnik said the main issue in the township is roads.

“We simply don't have the financial capacity to do all the projects that are out there,” Klabnik said. “The challenge is to find ways to increase revenue without increasing the burden on individual taxpayers.”

Kruger wants to aid farmers in securing any government assistance available to them.

“It's a farming community,” he said.

Klabnik is a solutions engineer for Verizon Wireless and lives in the township with his daughter, Sydney, a senior at Knoch High School, and son, Tyler, a junior in college.
