The Butler County commissioners this morning heard no complaints about enacting an ordinance next week imposing a $5 fee on vehicles registered in the county.

During the commissioners meeting in the government center, only two people spoke, and they supported the fee.

Ed Kirkwood, Butler Township manager, said it would be a fair assessment.

Kathleen McCaig of the Cranberry Township planing department said adopting the fee was an opportunity the county could not pass up.

The commissioners said after the meeting they received 20 phone calls protesting the fee.

They previously said the fee needs to be adopted soon to take advantage of a $2 million incentive temporarily offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Funds garnered from the fee, which are estimated to be $920,000 annually, could only be used for road and bridge work.

The commissioners last week said the county would allot any money not used for county projects to municipalities' infrastructure needs.
