HARRISBURG — State regulators have outlined steps a Western Pennsylvania amusement park must take after a child fell from a wooden roller coaster last summer — and they are urging other parks to make similar improvements.

The 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after falling from the Rollo Coaster ride at Westmoreland County’s Idlewild and SoakZone Park in August.

Officials said Idlewild must install manufacturer-approved secondary passenger restraints such as seat belts before the ride can be inspected to determine whether it can reopen.

In addition, an engineer must affirm that the ride meets structural, construction and design requirements; the park must consider adopting the minimum height requirement for new coasters; and changes in operator training must be outlined to prevent a similar accident.

A company representative didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
