SLIPPERY ROCK — Firefighters early Saturday morning doused a basement blaze on New Castle Street.

Chief Ken Taggart of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company said the home at 347 New Castle St. was under construction.

He said the cause was not suspicious.

“It looks like electrical,” Taggart said.

He said light smoke was coming from the third floor when crews arrived.

“We found a small fire in the basement and it extended to the first floor,” Taggart said.

He said the flames burned through the hardwood floor and a floor joist.

Taggart said the hardwood floor needs repaired along with some other fixes.

He estimated damages between $10,000 to $20,000. The owner’s name was unavailable.

West Penn Power shut off electricity to the house.

Roughly 20 firefighters responded to the 12:33 a.m. 911 call. The Harrisville and Pine Township volunteer fire departments assisted Slippery Rock.

Crews cleared the scene around 2:30 a.m.
