A group of sixth graders from Haine Middle School visited the Flight 93 National Memorial to learn about the history of the event and pay their respects to those who died.

CRANBERRY TWP — A group of Haine Middle School sixth graders went on a field trip to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County on Monday to experience history and pay their respects.

The trip was the culminating activity after a yearlong school project to raise money for the park's reforestation and bell tower projects.

The students raised $1,003 to help with the cost of planting trees on the hillsides surrounding the memorial and to build a 93-foot bell tower with 40 chimes in it, representing each of the passengers and crew who died in the crash.

About 70 students led by teachers Sharon Kramer, Jennifer Alvarado, Michelle Rogozinski and Ann Tanda toured the memorial.

“Visiting the memorial site taught us how the memorial keeps the passengers' memories alive,” said sixth-grader Sophia Galligane. “The money we donated continues to educate others about that day in history and the lessons we have learned for future generations.”
