HARMONY — Park improvements and cleanup for the borough’s boat launch were discussed at Tuesday’s council meeting.

The borough recently received an $8,600 county renovation grant that will go toward putting in new fall chips for its playgrounds, installing new liner and fencing and pet waste dispensers, and replacing basketball court nets.

The grant money, however, will not be used to clean up the boat launch by the Connoquenessing Creek near the end of Main Street.

“They were pretty specific as to what the grant was for,” said Greg Such, council president. “We need to be careful. We may need to take money out of our parks board funds.”

Council members and others in attendance said they have heard complaints about silt and debris buildup at the launch that is hindering kayakers and canoers from stopping in the borough.

“They said they couldn’t get in,” said Josh Meeder, a resident and businessman, of a kayaker who recently aired a grievance to him. “It’s bad.”

Such had three suggestions for the cleanup, including removing the debris with an attachment to the borough’s skid steer loader, cleaning the area with shovels and hiring a contractor to haul the debris away.

Don Sims, council vice president, suggested the borough rent equipment to remove the debris.

The Harmony Fire District was contacted about possibly cleaning the area up, but the firefighters told council that the amount of debris is too large and needs to be hauled away.

Meeder said he talked with adjacent property owners and said one possible remedy is to place the silt in a fill area near Aster Lane.

“There is a large depression there that all the runoff from one side of the property line meets there,” he said. “That would be a great place.”

Council members said they would speak with borough public works officials about the best method is to clean the launch.
