The Butler County commissioners are considering enacting an ordinance imposing a $5 fee on every nonexempt vehicle registered in the county.

County Commissioner Leslie Osche, board chairman, said the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is temporarily offering a $2 million incentive for counties adopting the fee.

She said the fee would generate an estimated $920,000 annually. Under state regulations, the funds could only be used for road and bridge work.

The county has 34 bridges deemed structurally deficient.

Osche said any money not needed by the county would be used to help municipalities with their infrastructure needs, including the replacement of traffic signals.

The $5 would be added to the state vehicle registration fee.

Vehicles not requiring registration, such as those owned by government and mass transportation providers, would be exempt from the fee.

The commissioners will discuss the proposed ordinance at their meeting Wednesday with a possible vote at the May 18 meeting.
