A tree falls in Callery

A large Japanese maple tree was downed during Tuesday's storm. The tree was in front of the home of Kevin and Kerrie Hardt in Callery.

It was a near miss for Kevin and Kerrie Hardt on Tuesday afternoon when a large Japanese maple tree became a victim of the high winds that blew through the area.

The only damage to the Hardt property at the intersection of Kline Avenue and Railroad Street was a corner of a chain-link fence, but the tree hit a Penn Power utility pole and took down the wires on the pole.

Kerrie Hardt said on Wednesday morning that God must have been watching over her property because had the tree hit the house, it could have injured the small children inside who she cares for at her in-home day care.

“We're very fortunate that it went the other way,” she said.

Hardt said she had just put the kids down for a nap in the living room, and was in the kitchen when she heard a loud “whoosh.”
