The National Weather Service will inspect areas in Butler County today to verify whether a tornado touched down during Monday afternoon's storm.

As of 8 a.m., exactly which spots will be checked had not been determined.

Steve Bicehouse, director of county emergency services, said he was asking the weather service to check out Prospect, Bruin and West Sunbury.

“It seemed to be mainly in the northern corridor,” Bicehouse said of the storm's impact.

The county 911 dispatch center received more than 100 weather-related calls beginning at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

“It slowed down around 5,” Bicehouse said.

Among the calls was one at 2:53 p.m. stating Rockdale Road at Morgan Road was shut down due to fallen trees.

Bicehouse said there is a danger of more trees falling today because winds are forecast to reach 40 mph.

“With the winds today, it heightens the risk,” he said.

As of 8:30 a.m., Central Electric Cooperative reported 1,700 power outages in the seven counties, including Butler, it services. A breakdown by county was unavailable.

Central Electric expected power to be restored today.

First Energy, which includes Penn Power and West Penn Power, reported 393 customers are still without power in Butler County.

Slippery Rock had the most outages with 63. Butler Township was second highest with 58. Connoquenessing Township was third with 49.

Todd Meyers, West Penn Power spokesman, said the majority of outages were West Penn customers at 337.

Meyers said the peak number of outages for West Penn Monday was 4,000, but most of those customers had their electric service restored Monday.

He said power should be restored to all customers today, but new outages may occur due to the expected wind gusts.

“There could be scattered outages today,” Meyers warned.
