Weeks after the co-owners of the Butler BlueSox lambasted the city authority in charge of running Kelly Automotive Park, the board says some of the owners' concerns are being addressed.

Authority board chairman Frank Cicco said the stadium has already had some work performed since last month's meeting, at which co-owners of the BlueSox expressed sharp dissatisfaction with the state of the ballpark.

Cicco said the park's backstop had been replaced, and broken or damaged seats had been replaced as well. That particular project began last year, Cicco said, and was completed late last month.

Cicco said the facility was also getting a “mid-year clean” to prepare it for the start of the BlueSox season, with window washing, painting, hallway cleaning and a dugout inspection being performed.

The authority also is working to replace lighting panels on the stadium's scoreboard, and expects work to repair parts of its sound system to be completed sometime this week.

Cicco pointed out that the stadium will have hosted more than 200 games before the BlueSox season begins later this month. That creates scheduling issues, Cicco said.

“That kind of makes it hard, at times, to get some of the work done — because there are games being played,” he said.

He also said that the authority is trying to execute a financial balancing act

“There isn't an endless stream of cash coming in that we can just drop everything and fulfill all the needs that the BlueSox are concerned with,” Cicco said.

Larry Sassone, one of the team's co-owners, said Monday that he appreciates the authority's efforts, but wants work refurbishing the stadium to continue to progress. He said the authority still needs to hire a manager to oversee maintenance of the park, and address other cleaning jobs and perform more grooming work on the outfield near the warning track.

“We both want the park to succeed, (and) not just for the BlueSox,” Sassone said. “We just need to keep moving forward.”
