ADAMS TWP — Residents of the Treesdale housing development whose homes are closest to Route 228 told the township supervisors on Monday night that traffic from the highway is causing excessive noise.

Joyce Hulings said the growl of jake brakes from tractor-trailers slowing down for stoplights is one problem.

“It’s to the point where people can’t sleep,” Hulings said.

She said the second problem is that Penn Power removed a number of trees from its right of way between Treesdale and Route 228 to place new utility poles.

Hulings said she and others in her neighborhood were promised that trees would be planted to abate noise from Route 228, which was significantly widened a few years ago at the Mars-Valencia Road intersection.

“We would like help from the board to work on this,” she said.

Ed Hardesty of the Treesdale Homeowners Association told the board the association doesn’t know how to resolve the problem.

“This has been an ongoing issue that has been raised with our board at every meeting we’ve had since we’ve been in existence,” Hardesty said.

Supervisor Russ Ford suggested that township police step up speed patrols in the area.

Tom Franceschina, supervisor vice president, asked solicitor Mike Gallagher if an ordinance regulating the use of jake brakes could be enacted.

Gallagher said he would look into the issue.

Don Aiken, chairman of the supervisors, directed code enforcement officer Gary Peaco to contact the state Department of Transportation about the situation.

“We’ll work on it and see what we can do,” Aiken said.
