For the third time in four days, a suspected drug overdose has claimed a life in Butler.

An autopsy is planned today for the latest victim, 35-year-old Desmond Best, who suffered an apparent overdose about 11:25 p.m. Monday at his parents’ home on Fifth Avenue.

Authorities said Best’s father found him on the bedroom floor of the house. The victim, who also was living there, was unresponsive.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced Best dead at 12:15 a.m. today.

Butler police and Butler Ambulance Service also were called. Police reportedly found two empty stamp bags of suspected heroin and a hypodermic needle at the scene.

Investigators believe a weekend overdose killed a woman at her home in Butler.

A 911 call from a 9-year-old child just after 6:30 p.m. Sunday sent city police and emergency crews to the house in the 300 block of Virginia Avenue, authorities said.

The child told the dispatcher that the woman was unconscious and not breathing.

At the home, which is divided into at least two apartments, crews found 56-year-old Bellina Hilliard unresponsive. Along with the 9-year-old, two other children, ages 7 and 8, were there.

Barr pronounced Hilliard dead at 6:59 p.m.

An autopsy was performed Monday but a cause of death is still pending results of toxicology tests, which won’t be available for several weeks, Barr said.

Police found a half dozen bags — full and empty — of suspected heroin.

Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam said the relationship, if any, between Hilliard and the children at the home was not known.

On Friday night, Brooks A. Rossman, 35, died of an apparent overdose at his halfway house in the 500 block of Eau Claire Street, authorities said

One of the man’s roommates found him not breathing and unconscious and notified 911.

Rossman, a Warren County native, was pronounced dead around midnight.

An autopsy Saturday did not determine a cause of death. Investigators said they are awaiting toxicology results.
