Strawberry Ridge offers versatility

Playing a solo round, golfer Chris Gallagher of Cranberry finishes his game on the 18th hole at Strawberry Ridge last week.
Golf course plays effectively for advanced and beginners in sport

HARMONY — Location and versatility.

Strawberry Ridge Golf Course is grateful for the former and is offering the latter.

“We’re fortunate to be located where we are,” course owner Tim McNulty said of the Harmony-based facility. “We’re in a growing area and that’s definitely helping us.

“Some other regions ... the golf course industry is hurting a little bit.”

While Strawberry Ridge is home to 15 golf leagues — each teeing off weekly at 4 p.m. or later on a weekday — the course serves as a viable place to play for everyone from the advanced golfer down to the beginner.

“We’re very appreciative of our leagues,” McNulty said. “The Penn Power (men’s) league has been here the longest. That league and the Cranberry Crossings league have 40 to 45 golfers.”

Penn Power has had a league at Strawberry Ridge since 2001. The course opened its first nine holes in 2000 and its back nine in 2003.

McNulty and his staff have since tweaked some holes, put in a driving range that features a practice area for putting, chipping out of sand traps and varying degrees of rough. A junior course continues to be under construction.

“We expect to seed that (junior) course within the next month. We feel there’s something here for everyone,” McNulty said. “Golfers can practice any phase of their game at the driving range and practice area.”

The course’s practice area can be used through hitting a bucket of golf balls for $7. Discounts are available through buying computer cards good for 10, 20 or 50 buckets.

While most golfers “take the conservative approach” in playing Strawberry Ridge, McNulty said, more advanced golfers can challenge themselves by playing the course aggressively.

“It can play either way,” he said.

New tee boxes have been put in on the par-3 No. 5, for example, giving golfers the choice of playing it as a 245-yard “pro” par 3 or as a basic 150-yard shot. The hole plays uphill.

The No. 12 par-5 hole can play as long as 625 yards, making it one of the longest holes on any golf course in the county.

“The total yardage here is deceiving,” McNulty said. “There are holes here that will test the long-ball guys.”

Strawberry Ridge also offers golf lessons through Tim Mitro, who is a certified instructor. He can be reached at 724-816-6410.

Junior lessons are available May 20, June 3 and June 17 from 10 a.m. to noon for $55 per session, $30 of which is given back through driving range credits. The junior golf lessons are for ages 14 and younger.

The restaurant at Strawberry Ridge offers burgers, reubens, fish sandwiches, pulled pork, steak and chicken salads. McNulty said the restaurant’s hours are dictated by the golfing.

“As it stays light outside longer, we stay open longer,” he said. “We offer dinners Friday through Sunday with steak as our specialty. The steak dinner is very popular with golf outings.”

Strawberry Ridge has approximately 15 golf outings scheduled so far this season and has room for more.

The course offers discounted rates of play to seniors age 63 and older, seniors 55-62, along with women.

“Golfers of any ability can enjoy a round here,” McNulty said. “We very much cherish our loyal customers, but we get a lot of newcomers each year as well.”
