Butler County Judge Thomas Doerr is warning residents about a scam that involves the courts.

According to an April 15 post on the county’s jury service website, at least one woman wired money to a phony deputy when she received notice in the mail that she had missed jury duty and a bench warrant had been issued for her. The notice alleges to have come from Doerr and gives a date and time the recipient must appear in court.

In this case, the scammer asks people to wire money to a “Deputy Evans.”

The county does not employ a deputy named Evans, the post states, and once money is sent by wire it is very difficult to get it back.

According to the post, there are no warrants pending for failure to appear at jury duty in Butler County. Doerr notes that the courts have the power to issue a warrant for someone who fails to appear for jury duty, but it just hasn’t been a problem in Butler County. Less than 1 percent of those summoned for jury duty do not show up on time.

When it does happen, court administration has telephoned those people, and they arrived late, the post states.

Anyone receiving this call should report it to local police.

Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe previously warned the community about a similar telephone scam in January.

Slupe said the scammers claim to be calling from a county sheriff’s office wanting money, gift cards or personal information from individuals because there is a warrant for their arrest for failing to appear for jury duty.

The caller may use the false name of “Lt. Frank Rogers,” he said.
