Butler County is allotting nearly $111,000 in grant money for 14 municipal park renovations.

The county commissioners Wednesday approved the grants for such additions as playground safety surfaces, walkways and handicap-accessibility improvements.

County Commissioner Kim Geyer said such projects benefit residents.

“It really enhances quality of life,” Geyer said.

She stressed the grants, which were recommended by the county Parks and Recreation Commission, cover a wide berth.

“It’s a real nice cross-section,” Geyer said.

Eight of the grants awarded $7,500 to the following park projects:

For the Clay Township Community Park, work entails the installation of a 64-foot handicap-accessible sidewalk and a eight-foot-high safety fence to prevent children from accessing the salt and limestone sheds.

The township funds $2,500 of the $10,000 project

In Connoquenessing Borough Park, the $10,000 project eliminates the rough surface and removes vegetation from the trail, as well as installs landscape fabric and a finer gravel. The borough pays the remaining $2,500.

At Fire Hall Park in East Butler, work entails the installation of a hard surface walkway from the fire hall parking lot to the new playground as well as a five-foot chain-link entrance gate. The borough funds $2,500 of the $11,700 project

At EDCO Park in Evans City, the $10,000 project adds pads for handicapped parking spaces and a handrail on the sloped sidewalk. The borough pays the remaining $2,500.

In the Marion Township Community Park, the outfield and baseline fencing will be replaced. The township funds $2,500 of the $10,000 project.

For Petrolia Borough Park, a handicap-accessible unisex bathroom facility will be installed. The borough pays $2,500 of the $10,000 project.

Rubber safety surfaces will be installed in the Seven Fields Borough Park. The borough pays the remaining $47,500 of the $55,000 project.

A two-mile walking trail will be added to the Slippery Rock Area Community Park in Slippery Rock Township. The township pays the remaining $204,688 of the $212,188 project.

Other grants are:

In Harmony parks, including Swamp Poodle Park, a $6,537 grant covers replenishment of safety surfacing and trail limestone, and rubber mats, geotextile fabric and pet cleanup dispensers will be added. The borough funds the remaining $2,179 of the $8,716 project.

In the Fairview Borough Park, a $4,500 grant will fund part of the replacement of safety surfacing in the playground. The borough pays the remaining $1,500 of the $6,000 project.

A $4,364 grant covers part of the installation of safety surfacing under playground equipment at Butler Memorial Park. The city funds the remaining $1,454 of the $5,819 project.

At McCullough Park in Karns City, a $3,750 grant goes toward the installation of a safety barrier by the ballfield. The borough pays the remaining $1,250 of the $5,000 project.

A $2,250 grant was allotted to the replacement of spring rider equipment and installation of fall surfacing under play equipment in the Lancaster Township Community Park. The township pays the remaining $750 of the $3,000 project.

In the Forward Township Community Park, a $1,875 grant goes toward the removal of 24 tree stumps and top soil, as well as adding limestone and concrete pads. The township funds the remaining $625 of the $2,500 project.

The county park grant program has awarded more than $1 million since its inception 23 years ago.
