PITTSBURGH — A Cuban national is set to plead guilty to charges he conspired to file 900 phony federal tax returns seeking $2.2 million in refunds by using employee information stolen from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Yoandy Perez Llanes was extradited from Venezuela in August. Llanes was indicted in June 2015 with unnamed others on charges of wire fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy.
According to the indictment, Llanes and at least three others were part of a group who used the hospital employees’ information to collect phony tax refunds as Amazon.com credits. The service offered by online filing service Turbo Tax is known as monetizing.
[naviga:h2]Erie officials mull community college[/naviga:h2]
ERIE — Local officials will decide whether they’ll throw their weight behind an effort to build a community college.
At least one member of the Erie City Council has said she supports the effort to establish a community college in Erie County. Councilman Sonya Arrington said it would give students a more affordable option.
A previous attempt to build a college in Erie failed because it lacked a major sponsor.
Several groups have already contributed $300,000 to the current effort and have promised $3.7 million more if the council ultimately votes to create the college.
[naviga:h2]Rollover crash kills 1, injures 3[/naviga:h2]
WEST MIFFLIN — Police were investigating a rollover crash involving two vehicles that killed one person and injured three others near Pittsburgh.
Police in West Mifflin have yet to release the names of those involved in the crash along Route 837 shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police say one of the vehicles rolled over, but they stopped short of saying how that happened.
[naviga:h2]Student athlete dies when ATV hits deer[/naviga:h2]
CLAYSBURG — Authorities say an all-terrain vehicle struck a deer and overturned on a croad, killing a high school standout softball player.
State police in Blair County said the accident happened at about 4:15 a.m. Friday along Knob Road in Greenfield Township. The ATV was heading south when it struck the animal and threw both riders. Neither was wearing a helmet. Police said the 23-year-old ATV driver fled the scene.
Police said 18-year-old Mikayla Focht of Duncansville was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hollidaysburg Area Senior High shortstop was named to the Pennsylvania Softball Coaches Association all-state team her junior year and intended to play for Saint Francis University in the fall.
