A deliberate, chain-reaction crash Thursday night on a Butler street was done to “make a point” to his girlfriend, the suspect told police.

Brady M. Grubbs, 20, of Ellwood City was arrested on felony assault and other charges following the alleged intentional wreck in the 300 block of East Locust Street, which followed an argument with the girlfriend.

The initial report to Butler police at 7:43 p.m. was for a vehicle accident in which a car had driven into another vehicle and people. Officers got there but there were no injuries.

Investigators pieced together what happened, police said, and learned that this was no accident either.

Witnesses told officers that the defendant had purposely gotten into a Honda Accord and backed up before accelerating forward into the back of an unoccupied Pontiac Vibe.

Grubbs owns the Pontiac. His uncle owns the Honda.

One of the witnesses estimated the Honda was traveling at 50 mph when it hit the Pontiac, forcing it into the back of a parked Chevrolet TrailBlazer.

In turn, the Chevy was pushed into a utility pole.

Grubbs’ girlfriend, 21-year-old Ariel Sleigher of Ellwood City, acknowledged that moments before the vehicular rampage, police said, she and the defendant had been arguing.

They were in Butler visiting relatives.

Before Grubbs got into his car, according to a witness account, he delivered a message to Sleigher: “Tell our son I’ll always love him.”

Police noted that Sleigher was standing near the Pontiac when he crashed.

Later, when speaking to the defendant, police asked him why he did it. “To make a point after the argument,” he purportedly replied.

The argument, he said, was over his suspicion that she was cheating on him.

The Honda and Pontiac both sustained severe damage. The Chevy had moderate damage. The utility pole apparently had little if any damage.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Grubbs on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and reckless driving.

He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail following arraignment.
