City man charged with assaulting boy

Butler police Monday night arrested a city man after they were called to his Center Avenue home for a report of a child being sexually assaulted.

Paul A. Claypoole, 39, who faces a list of charges , is being held in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.

Police said a man had just left his home about 9:35 p.m. when he came upon the defendant’s house. He looked into the window, which had no curtains, and saw the alleged crime.

The window was about 10 feet from the street.

“(The eyewitness) described the perpetrator as being fat and he was not wearing any clothing,” according to court documents.

The victim also was naked, the witness recounted, and was being assaulted in what appeared to be a laundry room at the home.

Police said the child is 15-year-old old. Claypoole, in the police complaint, is described as weighing 300 pounds. He is listed as 5 feet, 8 inches tall.

”What the (expletive) are you doing to that child?” the witnesses told police that he screamed to the defendant.

Claypoole, in turn, immediately turned off the lights inside his home, the witnesses said.

Police were called and found Claypoole and the boy.

The defendant initially waived his Miranda rights and spoke to police for about 15 minutes. But when he requested an attorney, police ended the interview.

Police later went to Claypoole’s home, which matched the eyewitness’ description of the window and the interior.

District Judge Bill O’Donnell arraigned Claypoole on felony charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and misdemeanor charges of indecent assault.
