Butler's annual Fall Festival is in need of a new president.

Sheri Hershberger was the festival's president for 10 years, but this year had to step down due to her job relocating to Pittsburgh.

Now, Hershberger and Mayor Tom Donaldson are looking to fill the vacancy.

“The mayor is looking for anyone who would like to step up and volunteer,” she said. “We'd definitely like someone with experience with event planning. It would be preferred.”

Candidates may call Hershberger at 724-822-0474 to apply.

If no candidate can be found soon, the annual fall festival may be canceled.

“We need someone to step up rather quickly as the event is in September,” Hershberger said.

Hershberger said she would be available to point the new president in the right direction, if needed, and Dahn Kilroy, the festival's vice president, said she would be willing to stay on and provide some experience for the new president, assuming they can find one.

Hershberger said, the president's job typically involves meeting with the various people who will be running the event, making sure everything is organized and ready to go. The president also works to attract vendors and crafters for the numerous booths that will be set up on Main Street.

“We close Main Street and set up in Diamond Park,” she said. “It's for the community of Butler. We want to get people who otherwise might not come downtown normally.”

The festival also features a car show and a kid zone.

The event is funded by sponsors and donations and all the festival workers are volunteers.

The festival started 39 years ago when it was called the Ethnic Festival, but the name was changed a little more than a decade ago when a study found that it would benefit from a new name.

In the nearly 10 years Hershberger organized the event, she said she saw the festival grow, most notably when they expanded to Friday for a “Fall Crawl.”

The festival has routinely brought thousands of people downtown to say their goodbyes to summer.
