CRANBERRY TWP — A house in the Fernway housing plan was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday.

Smoke started billowing from a single-story home at 269 Sherwood Drive around noon.

“I smelled smoke first, then I came outside and you couldn’t see anything,” said neighbor Karen Miller.

Miller said the home’s residents have not lived there long. Two people were at the home at the time of the fire, but escaped with help from police.

“It’s a shame. They were fixing up the place,” Miller said.

Fire crews from Cranberry, Adams Area Fire District, Callery and Harmony in Butler County, Big Knob in Beaver County, and Marshall Township in Allegheny County were on the scene.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside. The fire caused major damage to the home’s roof and interior. It was put out by 1 p.m., but crews were there longer to eliminate hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. However, township public safety director Dave Gallagher said firefighters believe the fire started in the garage.

One cat was rescued from the home. A pet pig was in the garage and died, township firefighter Mark Nanna said. Nanna said resuscitation was given to the pot-bellied pig, but the effort was unsuccessful.

Sherwood Drive and part of Robinhood Drive were closed during the duration of the fire.

Township police and EMS were also on the scene.

EMS Chief Jeff Kelly said “a couple” firefighters were evaluated for heat-related issues. However, no one was transported for injuries.
