HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — A waiter was fired from a Southern California restaurant after asking customers to prove they had legal residency before serving them.

Brenda Carrillo, 23, says she and a friend got the question at Saint Marc in Huntington Beach. Carrillo says the waiter later asked her sister and another friend to see their proof of residency.

She says the women complained to the manager and left. One later posted an account of the incident online.

The restaurant said in an online post that the waiter was fired.

Kent Bearden, senior director of operations for Saint Marc, says the restaurant will donate 10 percent of the weekend’s sales to a nonprofit chosen by the women.

BOSTON — Massachusetts lawmakers are vowing to respect the will of the voters, but aren’t ruling out changes to the state’s recreational marijuana law.

A special legislative committee that’s considering revisions to the law opens hearings at the Statehouse today.

Among those expected to testify are members of “Yes on 4,” the group that led the ballot initiative that made Massachusetts one of eight states where recreational marijuana use by adults is now legal. The group is demanding that lawmakers leave the measure alone and give it time to work.

State treasurer Deb Goldberg, whose office will oversee regulation of marijuana sales, also is scheduled to appear before the panel.

The Legislature already has moved to postpone the opening of retail pot shops in the state until mid-2018 at the earliest.

KEY WEST, Fla. — Key West police detectives nabbed a man wanted in Georgia for an assortment of violent crimes, including felony strangulation and aggravated assault with a weapon — after he used a store rewards card, which tipped authorities off to his whereabouts.

Cobb County Sheriff’s officials contacted Key West police Thursday saying 37-year-old Jamaal Seymour was possibly in Key West and was wanted on a number of counts.

Shortly after, Seymour used his rewards card at a CVS pharmacy. Card holders can earn benefits like coupons.

Detectives spotted Seymour that night and approached him. Police said the man took off running, but they caught him a short time later.

BOSTON — Tens of thousands of people lined the frigid streets of Boston on Sunday for the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, which went off amid high spirits and without a hitch after a dispute over whether a gay veterans group could march.

There was no shortage of green clothing, shamrock headbands and booze during the annual parade in South Boston. Some paradegoers said they would have attended no matter the outcome of the dispute over the OutVets gay veterans group.

The parade’s organizers, the South Boston Allied War Council, initially had voted against allowing marchers from OutVets, a group representing LGBTQ veterans. But organizers reversed the decision earlier this month after the stance drew backlash.
