How high can she go?

Knoch graduate and Waynesburg University senior Holly Bachman has scored 100 career goals for the Yellow Jackets with one more year to go.

WAYNESBURG — One hundred and counting.

How high will Knoch graduate Holly Bachman take the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse goal-scoring record?

She doesn't know — nor care.

“Now that I've reached 100, all I want to do is stay healthy, finish strong and help my team win,” the Yellow Jacket senior said. “How many goals I wind up with at this point really doesn't matter.”

Winning does.

And Waynesburg has struggled in that regard.

The program has lost 82 of the 100 games it has played since Waynesburg made its women's lacrosse debut in 2008. That includes a 10-30 record since Bachman joined the team — and a season-opening 19-5 loss to Franciscan University this year.

It was in that game that Bachman scored her 100th career goal.

“We have no one else approaching 100,” second-year Waynesburg coach Stephanie Benkowski said. “Holly has been more than a goal-scorer for us. She is a team leader, a team player.

“I know the losing has been frustrating to her. But she gives everything she has to this team.”

The five wins Waynesburg recorded during Bachman's sophomore season are a program record.

The team has 10 seniors this season, but only 14 players.

“The typical collegiate roster is 20,” Benkowski said. “We lost seven freshmen this year due to reasons unrelated to school ... just bad luck.

“There's been a lot of coaching turnover here, too. I'm the fifth head coach in nine years. That hasn't helped recruiting.”

Bachman has 100 goals and 13 assists in her career.

“Our offense is designed for me to shoot,” she said. “That's the mentality. Working plays through passing hasn't worked well for us. When the shot is there, take it.

“It's been extremely difficult,” Bachman said of losing. “It's easy for girls on the other team to pick me out, to double or triple-team me. I just treat that as an added challenge.”

A three-time team MVP in girls lacrosse at Knoch, Bachman played defender for the Knights. The most goals she ever scored in a high school season was 11.

Originally recruited by Waynesburg to play defense, Bachman was switched to an attack position prior to her freshman season.

“We saw the speed she had and noticed her aggressiveness,” said Benkowski, an assistant coach at the time. “And we had plenty of defenders to play in her absence back there.

“The move clearly paid off. Holly is a natural scorer and she helps get other players involved offensively.”

Based on her high school career, Bachman never envisioned tallying many goals in college, let alone 100.

“It's a thrill being able to attain something I never even set out to do,” she said. “The coaches saw I could handle the ball and they liked my stick skills.”

Bachman did not begin playing competitive lacrosse until her freshman year at Knoch, but she became involved in the sport before that. She had three cousins — Cody, Clay and Connor Bachman — who played at Butler.

“I used to go to their games and was fascinated by them,” Bachman said. “My aunt bought me a lacrosse stick for Christmas one year and I started playing around with it.”

The rest is history.

Bachman will graduate April 30 with a degree in athletic training. She plans to pursue a masters in education.

“I'll stay involved with the sport,” she said of lacrosse. “I'll look for an adult league to play in and I hope to become a coach myself one day.”
