A 31-year-old man is accused of falling asleep while he was supposed to be supervising two young children, including one of his own.

City police arrested Daniel Leroy Wolfe after a 6-year-old girl left in his care Tuesday morning wandered outside of her home in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue. She later turned up safe and unharmed several houses away.

Wolfe, who has no known address, was arraigned on two counts of child endangerment and a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $1,500 bail following arraignment.

Police were called shortly before noon when a 26-year-old woman reported her child missing. She said she last saw her child, the 6-year-old girl, about 7:30 a.m. when she left her with the defendant at her home.

She identified the babysitter as “Daniel” but admitted that she did not know his last name. She described him as a friend, according to court documents.

Wolfe also was supposed to be watching his son, believed to be 6 years old, while she went to a doctor’s appointment, the woman told police.

“She returned home to pick up her daughter for her dentist appointment,” a police affidavit said, “and could not find her and was in a panic.”

Wolfe, she recounted, acknowledged that he had fallen asleep and did not know the girl’s whereabouts.

The child’s mother apparently found her daughter at a neighbor’s house.

When police went to speak to Wolfe at the mother’s home, they found him “hiding in the basement,” documents said.

A search of his coat turned up a marijuana pipe and several syringes.

Police also learned that Wolfe was wanted on a bench warrant.
