A convicted drug felon is back behind bars after county narcotics officers allegedly turned up suspected crack cocaine and other contraband at his Butler home, authorities said.

Matthias J. Johnson, 40, also was caught with a cell phone that contained text messages from customers looking to pick up some product, authorities said.

Johnson was placed in Butler County Prison for a probation violation.

His return ticket to jail followed a March 3 compliance check by county probation officers at his home on First Street. The officers also called the Butler County Drug Task Force for assistance in making the check, according to court documents.

Investigators did not find Johnson when they entered the house. But inside were David Riker and Sanya L. Vantassel, who both apparently had been using the basement as their sleeping area.

Authorities said neither Riker, 39, nor Vantassel, 39, has a known address. Vantassel is accused of giving authorities a bogus name during the incident.

A search of the pair’s sleeping area turned up a case that contained hypodermic needles, smoking pipes and a scale, documents said.

On the kitchen table, said county Detective Tim Fennell, who heads the drug task force, officers found a syringe and spoon, which appeared to have drug residue on it.

A search of trash cans in the home yielded dozens of empty stamp bags of heroin.

Johnson eventually returned home while officers were still there. He was immediately detained. Fennell said he turned over two bags of suspected crack as well as a crack pipe hidden in one of his shoes.

He also had his cell phone, which kept receiving texts and missed calls, even as the compliance check and house search continued.

Fennell later obtained a search warrant for the phone data. The inspection found a number of suspicious conversations.

Texters, documents said, were asking for “an eighth” and a “twenty bag of weed,” documents said.

In another conversation, investigators said, Johnson reached out in a purported attempt to obtain clean urine, presumably to beat a drug test.

Johnson is charged with criminal use of a communication facility, a felony, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

The task force, in an unrelated case, also charged Johnson with possession of a small amount of marijuana, stemming from a Feb. 16 home compliance check.

Riker and Vantassel are both charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with last week’s compliance check.

Vantassel also is charged with false identification to law enforcement authorities.

Due to his charge, Riker was placed in the county prison on a probation violation.

Additionally, he was arraigned Saturday on unrelated misdemeanor drug possession charges that Adams Township police filed in August. He is being held on $30,000 bail in that case.

Vantassel remains free.
