JACKSON TWP — An Allegheny County man faces charges after allegedly stealing more than $13,000 from his employer through the use of fuel cards.

Police allege Mark A. Giles, 28, of Clinton had been stealing from Sysco Foods Services from December 2013 to October 2016 by use of company gas cards.

A detailed spreadsheet showed fuel cards being used near Giles' residence, near his place of employment and other areas Giles would travel.

Police reports state Bill Oehmler, Sysco's transportation vice president, learned that Giles would allegedly take a fuel card intended for delivery drivers and use PIN numbers from other employees.

Employees are not allowed to use cards for personal needs and Giles did not have a company card assigned to him.

Giles allegedly confessed to the thefts and apologized for stealing the fuel. He sent text messages to Oehmler in October stating, “I fell on hard times and I took the coward way out by taking from the company.”

Other text messages sent pleaded for charges not to be filed and that he would pay back the amount stolen somehow. The text messages are being used as evidence, police reports state.

Giles was interviewed by Jackson Township police later in the month and allegedly confessed to the fuel thefts. He reportedly told police he stole fuel “at most” for one year and that the amount stolen was about $3,500 worth.

Giles faces felony charges of theft and unauthorized access to a device. Charges were filed on Jan. 3. He waived his charges Tuesday to county court, where he will be arraigned on April 18.
