Leader of Marines upset by scandalWASHINGTON — The commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps condemned the use of a secret Facebook page by some Marines to share nude photos of women, including female Marines. And he urged victims to come forward if they have been harassed or abused, including over social media.Gen. Robert Neller, in a sharp video message released Tuesday, said Marines should be focused on preparing to fight, “not hiding on social media participating in or being aware of actions that are disrespectful and harmful to other Marines. It’s embarrassing to our Corps, to our families and to the nation.”The nearly four-minute video, distributed on various Marine websites and social media pages, represents the first expansive comments Neller has made about the controversy that has triggered an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.Nude photographs of female Marines, veterans from across the military, and other women were shared on the Facebook page “Marines United,” and the accompanying posts included obscene and threatening comments.

Smoke closes road in FloridaNAPLES, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol says a portion of Interstate 75 that’s also known as Alligator Alley is shut down due to smoky conditions from a wildfire.Lt. Gregory Bueno said in an e-mail early today that motorists should seek alternatives routes on the highway that runs between Naples on Florida’s Gulf Coast to the Fort Lauderdale area on the Atlantic Coast. It’s the major east-west route across southern Florida.The road was closed Tuesday after smoke from a 6,000-acre brush fire in Collier County caused poor visibility. Bueno said troopers are continuing to monitor conditions.Florida Forest Service spokesman Samantha Quinn told the Naples Daily News the fire has destroyed two homes in eastern Collier County. No injuries were reported.Residents of several nearby communities have been evacuated.The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Hawaii plans travel ban challengeHONOLULU — Hawaii plans to challenge President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban, Attorney General Doug Chin said Tuesday.The state wants to amend its existing lawsuit challenging Trump’s previous order to contest the revised one, according to a motion filed Tuesday in federal court in Honolulu.The new order bars new visas for people from six Muslim-majority countries and temporarily shuts down America’s refugee program, affecting would-be visitors and immigrants from Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Libya.
