Man has fatal heart attack, crashes his SUV

An elderly man suffered an apparent fatal heart attack at the wheel of his sport utility vehicle Monday afternoon and crashed into a utility pole in the 600 block of Hansen Avenue in Butler, city police said.

Corbett M. Stewart, 75, of Butler Township was pronounced dead at Butler Memorial Hospital following the accident about 2:30 p.m.

Stewart's 1998 Ford Explorer was northbound when he suffered a medical emergency, according to a police report. Investigators said he had a pre-existing heart condition and a pacemaker.

The SUV “veered hard right,” the report said, and hit the pole on the east berm. Police said the vehicle hit the pole head-on at full speed.

Police said Stewart had no pulse when he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The report did not indicate that he had any injuries from the accident.

Traffic was restricted to one lane on the road for about 30 minutes while the vehicle was towed. Butler Fire Department Fire assisted at the scene.

Police said the West Penn Power pole was damaged and would need to be replaced.
