Jennifer Ruth Normand, 72, of Slippery Rock passed away Friday at the VNA Inpatient Hospice in Butler following an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 17, 1944, in Charleston, W.Va., to Robert Howard Oster and Claudia Esther Parsons Oster. Jennifer married Joseph John Normand on April 12, 1969. She earned her bachelor's degree from Shippensburg University and later worked as a substitute teacher in the Slippery Rock and Moniteau school districts.

Jennifer was a good woman, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was a teacher all of her life, affecting many. She traveled the world, living for periods in China and Korea. She loved gardening and the outdoors. She was brave, compassionate and considerate to others to the end. She is with God.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph, at home; four children, Joseph Nicholas and his wife, Tamila, of Slippery Rock, David Noel and his wife, Meagan, of Pittston, Pa., Ian Matthew of Washington, D.C., Joel Maximilian and his wife, Maria, of Erie; two brothers, Robert Howard Oster and his wife, Mary Jane, and David William Oster and his wife, Toni, all of Pittsburgh; 10 grandchildren, Joseph Augustus, Clara, Peter, Adelaide, Luke, Marguerite, John, Madison, Amelia and Marcus. She was preceded in death by her parents.

NORMAND — Family of Jennifer Ruth Normand, who died Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery of Glenshaw. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, with the Rev. Robert Seeman presiding.
