Viola M. Porter

Viola M. Porter, 96, of Butler, formerly of Valencia, passed away peacefully at 2:11 a.m. Friday at Lowrie Place.

She was born March 2, 1920 in Cabot to the late Herman Kummer and Ellen Heller Kummer.

Viola was a homemaker and worked at Easley’s and the Merdian Inn. She was a former member of Glade Run Presbyterian Church and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Mars.

Viola was a kind and compassionate friend to all who knew her. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: baking, cooking, crocheting and crafts.

Chuck and Viola especially liked tending their rose bushes. They also cherished day trips and outings with family and friends. Above all she was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by two sons, Robert E. Kaufman and his wife Nancy of Butler and James N. Porter and his wife Jeannie of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren, Shawn Kaufman and his wife Vanessa of London, England and Laura Hoover and her husband Brian of Penn Township; five great grandchildren, Travis, Michaela, Isabelle and Mason Hoover and Scarlett Kaufman; one stepdaughter, Barbara Forsman and her husband Ron of Lower Burrell; one stepson, Keith Porter and his wife Michele of Raleigh, N.C.; four step-grandchildren; several step-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jane Kummer of Renfrew; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Orvis E. Kaufman, whom she married on June 14, 1943 and who passed away on Dec. 13, 1947, and her second husband, Charles N. Porter, whom she married on Dec. 15, 1952 and who passed away on Aug. 10, 2005; two sisters, Alberta Shimmell and Eleanora “Nora” Shilling; and also by two brothers, Clair “Bus” Kummer and Albert Kummer.

PORTER — Friends of Viola M. Porter, who died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Glenn P Crytzer, Three Rivers Hospice Chaplain, officiating.

Burial will take place in the Greenlawn Burial Estates.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Butler Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler, PA 16001.
