CONCORD TWP — Fire quickly laid waste to a mobile home on Hooker Road early this morning but no one was injured.

Two people were inside but they managed to get out, authorities said. Working smoke detectors possibly alerted the occupants.

Neighbors began calling 911 shortly before 3 a.m. But by the time the first fire crews arrived, flames had overtaken the older, singlewide trailer.

The state police fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze, which was not immediately believed to be suspicious.

Police investigators could not be reached for comment. Chief Nick Grove of the North Washington Township Fire Department did not return telephone calls this morning.

The names of the home’s occupants were not known but neighbors described them as an older man, who owns the trailer, and a woman. Their relationship ship was not known.

The 14-foot-by-70-foot mobile home sat in back of Kevin Stevick’s home. He was awakened by his wife, who saw the fire and started screaming

“I heard her yell and I jumped up,” Stevick said. “I thought my house was on fire.”

He looked out the kitchen window and saw the blaze. “It was totally engulfed,” he said.

Stevick put on sweat pants, shoes and boots and headed out for a better look.

“I ran through fields and across the creek,” he said. Other neighbors had gathered outside, too.

“I asked if (the occupants) got out?” He was told they did.

Some 30 volunteer firefighters from six departments were called.

There are no nearby fire hydrants and firefighters had to employ a tanker shuttle for water using a dry hydrant on Troutman Road in Concord Township.

Assisting the North Washington VFD were firefighters from West Sunbury, Chicora, Oneida Valley, Petrolia and Eau Claire.
