Some residents of Rep. Mike Kelly’s 3rd Congressional District want the congressman to know they don’t like how he’s doing his job in Washington, D.C.

A group of about 30 people gathered in Diamond Park Tuesday morning and marched to Kelly’s Butler office, saying they wanted to draw attention to various issues and the fact that the third-term House member hasn’t scheduled a town-hall meeting with constituents during the chamber’s weeklong recess.

The protestors, who waited outside Kelly’s office in the Morgan Center quietly while staff members met with groups of four, said their concerns were spread across a variety of topics — from Kelly’s support of President Donald Trump to his votes on legislation that would roll back environmental regulations and promote fossil fuel production.

Emily Borcz of West Sunbury said environmental issues brought her out on Tuesday morning. Borcz said she was upset with Kelly’s votes against the federal government’s stream protection rule, to allow hunting in wildlife refugees, and easing some restrictions on natural gas wells.

Many people who turned out said they had reached out to Kelly on various issues important to them and weren’t satisfied with the way his office handled their inquiries.

“Mike Kelly is avoiding his constituency,” said Elizabeth Hoover of Chicora. “Why does he even want to be a congressman if he doesn’t want to hear what his constituency has to say?”

Kathy and Tom Kowalczuk of Harmony said they had written the congressman at least 75 letters in the last six months, and felt they received mostly form letter responses in reply.

The Kowalczuks and others said that written correspondence with Kelly’s offices was generally returned, but their phone calls often went unanswered and their messages unreturned. They were upset with Kelly’s vote against a House resolution seeking to force Trump to release his tax returns.

“I think that’s the only way we’re going to find out what his (Trump’s) foreign investments are,” said Kathy Kowalczuks.
