FREEPORT — Borough council will be studying what the game plan should be for James E. Swartz Sr. Memorial Field.

Council President Richard Hastings, said in an interview a committee composed of council members, residents and borough business owners would examine and seek public input for potential uses for the stadium, the former home of Freeport High School's football team.

The Yellowjackets now have their own stadium at the high school complex off Route 356 in Buffalo Township.

The borough can tap into grant money from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Hastings said the borough could receive up to $90,000 from the state depending on what is determined by pending public meetings discussing the stadium.

To receive $90,000, the borough would be required to come up with a $20,000 match.

“I feel that getting awarded this grant is a blessing to Freeport and will allow the borough to keep this asset and improve upon it for the betterment of the community,” Hastings said.

The field still is used for the annual Freeport International Baseball Invitational in July and is the site for PONY league baseball games.

While the borough is going for the first down, it is not too late to punt.

Mayor Jim Swartz said council should seriously consider what to do with the field, which is named after his father, before using grant money that carries a condition precluding a sale for decades.

“What's the stipulations if you want to sell it,” Swartz said. “That's something you want to look at. Is it worth it in the long run?”
