NWHL all-stars shine in Cranberry

CRANBERRY TWP — Professional women’s hockey coming to Pittsburgh?

Such a move may have received a jump-start Sunday as the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex hosted the second annual National Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game.

The game was sold out as Amanda Kessel, sister of Pittsburgh Penguins’ standout winger Phil Kessel and the face of the league, scored three goals to lead Team Kessel to an 11-10 win over Team Steadman.

Team Steadman was named for Kelley Steadman, Director of Hockey Operations at Robert Morris University. Steadman scored a goal and added two assists in the game.

The game consisted of two 20-minute periods. Team Kessel began the contest with a 3-2 lead, based on results from a skills competition held Saturday at the UPMC Lemieux Complex. A girls hockey clinic held in conjunction with the weekend’s festivities was sold out as well.

Though the Penguins were returning from a road game Saturday night in Arizona, Kessel arrived at the Cranberry facility in time to see his sister net her third goal. It was an empty-netter.

The NWHL consists of only four franchises — the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, New York Riveters and Connecticut Whale — and has been struggling financially.

Sunday marked its second all-star game. The inaugural event took place last season in Buffalo.

The league is reportedly considering Pittsburgh as a site for a potential expansion franchise.
