In Brief

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior point guard Lexi Carpenter has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.

She becomes the first Rock women’s basketball player to receive this honor since Tracy Whitling in 2000-01.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must maintain a grade point average above 3.30 and have significant athletic credentials. Carpenter leads the PSAC with 19.1 points per game, averages 4.8 assists and is shooting a league-best 88 percent from the free throw line.

Carrying a 3.5 GPA as a communications major, Carpenter is now eligible to be named an academic All-American. That team will be announced March 1.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates bolstered their infield depth on Friday, acquiring Phil Gosselin from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league pitcher Frank Duncan.

The 28-year-old Gosselin hit .277 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI in 122 games for Arizona in 2016. He led the majors in both pinch hit appearances (83) and pinch hits (20) last season. Both numbers set new club records.

Gosselin can move around defensively, an asset the Pirates need after versatile Sean Rodriguez left for Atlanta in free agency. Gosselin made 35 appearances at second base, 10 at third base, six at first and three more in the outfield.

Gosselin is a career .283 hitter across four seasons with Atlanta and Arizona.

The 25-year-old Duncan, a right-handed starter, went 9-6 with a 2.33 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis last season.

[naviga:h3]Dolan says he won’t fire Jackson[/naviga:h3]

NEW YORK — James Dolan says he won’t fire Phil Jackson or stand in the way if the Knicks president wants to trade Carmelo Anthony.

Dolan said Friday during an ESPN Radio interview that Jackson will be allowed to finish the remaining 2 1/2 years on his five-year contract if he chooses. Either side can opt out of the deal after this season, but Dolan says he won’t.

The Madison Square Garden chairman says the 71-year-old Jackson deserves more time to improve the team, which has missed the playoffs the previous two years and entered its game against Denver with a 22-32 record. Dolan says he promised Jackson full autonomy when he hired him.
