Gene A. Myers Sr.
Gene A. Myers Sr., 83, of Slippery Rock passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Butler.
He was born July 29, 1933, in Butler, the son of the late Benjamin Myers and Hazel Selfridge Myers.
As a teenager, he played baseball and has fond memories of being a catcher when the semi-pro baseball teams came to Pullman Park to practice.
Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes and corn hole. He and his wife belonged to the Hunting and Fishing Club in East Butler. He participated in competitive archery and horseshoe tournaments.
Gene enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and was in the Anti-Aircraft Unit in Japan during the Korean War. Later, Gene was a truck driver for 19 years at Western Auto and a few other trucking companies before his retirement.
Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Ada Johnson Myers; five daughters, Debbie (Tom) Ewing of Butler, Pamela (Lee) Mrocek of Butler, Lori (Frank Sharbuno) Manfredi of Cocoa, Fla., Sharon (John) Franasiak of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Wendy (Bob) Scanlon of Slippery Rock; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Karen Neyman of Saxonburg; and one aunt, Ruth Swigart of Butler.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gene “Buddy” Myers Jr.; his grandson, Evan Boy; and his sister, Carol “Sue” Ross.
MYERS — Friends of Gene A. Myers Sr., who died Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, will be received from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. Jim Lewis officiating.Military honors at the funeral home will be conducted by the VFW Post 249 and Lyndora Legion Post 778.
