Harry “Sonny” Perry Calhoun

Harry “Sonny” Perry Calhoun, 85, of Medical Lake, Wash., passed away Dec. 9 in Spokane, Wash.

Harry was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Millvale, Pa., to Harry Oliver Calhoun and Nellie Agnes Rogers Calhoun.

He spent his youth in Petrolia and Fairview, was a 1948 graduate of the Fairview-Karns City High School and attended Pennsylvania State University before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1952.

Harry married Janet Lee Horchler, a graduate of Butler High School, on April 18, 1953, at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Harry served in the Strategic Air Command with more than 5,000 hours as a B-52 radar navigator, including more than 170 combat missions in Vietnam. He retired in 1975 at the rank of lieutenant colonel at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash.

Following his military career, Harry received degrees in industrial arts from Eastern Washington University and electrical engineering from Gonzaga University, and he was employed as a utilities engineer for the Grant County Washington Public Utility District until retiring in 1995.

Harry was an avid fly fisherman and longtime member of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club in Spokane, and he was a frequent and popular visitor at the Northern Quest Casino in Airway Heights.

Harry was preceded in death by Janet, his wife of 59 years; and his younger brothers, James Rogers Calhoun and Finley Joel Calhoun.

He is survived by his daughter, Sara Calhoun (Hubert) Hunchak of Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada; his son, Charles (Susan) Calhoun of Annandale, Va.; his granddaughters, Jessie Quintero (Jeremiah) Johnson of Shrewsbury, Mass., Lauren Louise Calhoun of New York City, and Larissa Nicole Calhoun of McLean, Va.; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin Quintero Johnson and Cecilia Quintero Johnson of Shrewsbury, Mass.; his brother, Jan (Diane) Calhoun of St. James, N.C.; and his sister, Edna Bloom of Lake City, Pa.

Harry will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.

CALHOUN — A memorial service for Harry “Sonny” Perry Calhoun, who died Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, will be conducted later.
