Symphony names Young Artist winner
The Butler County Symphony Association has selected Angela Renninger as the winner of the 38th annual Young Artist Competition.
The competition was open to college-age musicians and was conducted Jan. 15 at Swope Music Hall at Slippery Rock University.
Renninger will receive a $400 prize and will perform with the Butler symphony on April 8.
The competition was open to instrumentalists and vocalists who are high school graduates, not exceeding age 25, who live within a 25-mile radius of the city of Butler, or any nonresident student attending Allegheny College, Clarion University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Indiana (Pa.) University, Slippery Rock University, Thiel College or Westminster College.
Renninger is a junior at Westminster pursuing a bachelor’s in music education and performance. She is the principal saxophonist in the Wind Ensemble, soprano player in the Nasturtium Quartet, and founder of the Westminster Saxophone Ensemble.
She is also part of Pennsylvania Collegiate Music Educators Association and is president of the Phi Omega chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon.
Recent awards include runner-up for the 2016 MTNA State Competition, selection to participate in the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band, and the opportunity to play in the National Intercollegiate Band.
The symphony’s upcoming “Great Romantics”concert is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 4.
