Charges filed for baby vegan dietUNIONTOWN, Pa. — A woman accused of malnourishing her baby while following a vegan diet has been ordered to stand trial on a child endangerment charge.Authorities in Fayette County said that 33-year-old Elizabeth Hawk of Confluence was feeding her 11-month-old a vegan diet of nuts and berries.A Child and Youth Services worker testified Tuesday that the child had a severe untreated rash and couldn’t move. Family members said the child couldn’t crawl and hadn’t developed teeth.Defense attorney David Kaiser sought dismissal of the charge, saying it wasn’t a criminal case.Hawk was taken to Fayette County Prison in lieu of $40,000 bail pending formal arraignment Feb. 16.
After cancer bout, Wolf’s health goodHARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s office says the Democrat has a “clean bill of health” less than a year after he revealed he had a treatable form of prostate cancer.His press secretary on Wednesday said the Wolf, 68, got the news from his doctor last week.The spokesman, J.J. Abbott, says he had no other information about the doctor’s assessment of Wolf.Wolf has kept a busy schedule while receiving treatment, traveling around the state and attending functions. Wolf is also planning to run for re-election in 2018.
Former U.S. Rep. begins his sentenceLEWIS RUN, Pa. — A longtime Pennsylvania congressman convicted of racketeering has reported to a federal prison in Western Pennsylvania to begin his 10-year sentence.Former U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah spent 20 years in Congress before his June conviction of taking an illegal $1 million campaign loan, then using government and nonprofit funds to repay it. Four co-defendants were also convicted.Fattah lost his bid to stay out of prison while he appeals.
