CRANBERRY TWP — A Butler man who was involved in a two-vehicle crash was cited for driving under the influence and other offenses.

Curtis William Irion, 67, of Butler was involved in a crash in November on Franklin Road near where Cranberry Township Police Officer William Wilson was sitting at a red light.

According to Wilson’s report, he got the cars involved off the road and checked on the drivers.

Wilson approached the passenger window of a VW Jetta and found the driver “lethargic.” When the driver would not look at Wilson despite repeated knocking on the window and shouting at the driver, Wilson opened the unlocked passenger side door.

According to his report, Wilson saw that a cup of red wine that had apparently been in a cup holder had spilled throughout the car. After admitting he had been drinking “a bit,” the driver, identified as Irion, allegedly opened the glove box without being asked to.

“I immediately observed a gun in his glove box,” Wilson said in his report.

When Irion reached toward the weapon, Wilson further entered the vehicle and grabbed Irion’s wrist. He secured the gun and ordered Irion out of the vehicle.

The report said Irion had trouble exiting the car and was unable to stand as he fell against his car.

A field sobriety test administered by another officer was stopped for Irion’s safety, and the report said a small amount of marijuana was found in a tin in Irion’s pocket.

A blood test at UPMC Passavant Hospital revealed that Irion’s blood alcohol content was 0.292, which is almost four times the legal limit.

Irion’s blood test also revealed the presence of amphetamine and THC.

Besides DUI, Irion was charged with possession of marijuana, driving at an unsafe speed and driving under the control of alcohol and drugs.

On Friday, Irion appeared before District Judge David Kovach to waive his charges to court. A formal arraignment is set for March 27 in Butler County Court.
