SUGARCREEK TWP, Armstrong County — A Pittsburgh man died Saturday morning when the car he was riding in slammed into a tree along Route 268, just several miles east of the Butler County line, authorities said.

The driver, who state police suspect was intoxicated, was hospitalized with injuries.

John W. McCoy Sr., 53, was a front-seat passenger in a speeding 2010 Lincoln MKZ that veered off Route 268 in Sugarcreek Township shortly after 11 a.m. and crashed in Sugarcreek Township, investigators said.

McCoy was taken to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin Township where he was later pronounced dead in the emergency room, said Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers.

He died of “multiple blunt force traumas,” Myers said in a news release.

Police did not identify the driver, who is a 55-year-old man from Pittsburgh. He was taken to an unspecified hospital with injuries described as “moderate, according to a police report.

The driver was speeding in his northbound car on snow-covered Route 268 where it went off the east berm and hit the tree sideways, investigators said.

Police suspect the driver was impaired by drugs and/or alcohol when he crashed. Charges of driving under the influence are pending toxicology results, police said.

The wreck, which closed the road for about four hours, remains under investigation.

Assisting police at the scene were firefighters from Sugarcreek and East Franklin townships and Applewold, and ambulance crews from Sugarcreek and Kittanning.
