Charles Manson, 82, taken to hospitalBAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Amid reports that Charles Manson has been taken from his California prison cell to a hospital, a state corrections official would confirm only that the 82-year-old killer and cult leader was still alive.Both TMZ and the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Manson had been hospitalized. TMZ said Manson had been taken to a medical center in Bakersfield, about 60 miles south of Corcoran State Prison where he was being held.
NAACP president arrested in protestMONTGOMERY, Ala. — The national president of the NAACP and five others were arrested after staging a sit-in Tuesday at the Alabama office of Sen. Jeff Sessions, the nominee for U.S. Attorney General, the civil rights group said.The organization held the demonstration to protest Sessions’ nomination by President-elect Donald Trump, criticizing Sessions’ record and views on civil rights, immigration, criminal justice reform, and voting rights enforcement.“We have an attorney general nominee who does not acknowledge the reality of voter suppression while mouthing faith in the myth of voter fraud,” NAACP President Cornell William Brooks said by phone earlier in Tuesday’s protest. Brooks called Sessions a poor choice to lead the U.S. Justice Department.
School officer on leave during probeROLESVILLE, N.C. — A school resource officer in North Carolina has been placed on leave after a brief video posted online shows him picking up and slamming a female high school student to the floor.Authorities are investigating the eight-second video posted Tuesday on Twitter.The video itself doesn’t show what led up to or followed this scene. Rolesville Police Chief Bobby Langston said he’s reviewing the case. A subsequent statement said Langston has asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to look into the incident.Wake County schools spokesman Lisa Luten said she’s working with the Rolesville Police Department to get more details. The video shows an officer, surrounded by shouting students at Rolesville High School, lifting and then dropping the girl to the floor.
