You hear it all the time. The Christmas season is about miracles.

But if there really is a Santa Claus, how about seeing him see to it that at least some of the following dreams occur:

-The Pirates pull the trigger on a trade for one more veteran starting pitcher sometime in the next few days.

-Pitt running back James Conner — and Slippery Rock University running back Shamar Greene — both wind up with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

-Jack Gaiser, a 92-year-old golfer from Chicora, shoots his age on the back nine as well as the front at Stoughton Acres.

-A public school wins a Pennsylvania state basketball championship every once in a while.

-A record number of golfers flood the Lake Arthur course for the Butler Eagle County Amateur come August.

-The officials come to their senses, reverse a horrid pass interference call on the final play of the Edinboro-Slippery Rock game this past season and allow SRU to carry a 23-game home winning streak into the 2017 season.

-Butler High School puts together a winning football season and goes to the state playoffs.

-The state bowling tournament — men’s and women’s — comes back to Butler County — again and again and again.

-Pitt and West Virginia play each other in football and basketball on an annual basis.

-A Butler County preseason basketball tournament is born and involves Butler, Seneca Valley, Knoch, Mars, Karns City, Moniteau, Slippery Rock, Freeport and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. (Yes, that’s an odd number, but we are talking miracles here.)

-An ice rink actually gets built in Butler.

-The Cleveland Browns have the same starting quarterback four games in a row.

-College football’s national playoff expands to eight teams.

-Knoch High School gets artificial turf in its football stadium — and makes it a true football, soccer and lacrosse stadium.

-Seneca Valley graduate Kevan Smith becomes starting catcher for the Chicago White Sox — and bats against fellow Seneca Valley graduate Cory Mazzoni when the ChiSox host the San Diego Padres in early May.

-Karns City’s boys or girls soccer team wins the state championship.

Think some of this stuff is far-fetched, even for Santa Claus?

Well, let’s review what happened in 2016.

Moniteau’s softball team reached the state finals after never having won a state tournament game before, a Cleveland team won a world championship, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. Penn State won the Big Ten football title and Portersville Christian won the state title in archery after forming a team just three years ago.

Miraculous stuff can happen.

It’s the Christmas season, after all.
