JACKSON TWP — About a month after a vehicle weight limit was lifted on Route 528, police have been issuing citations to truck drivers violating length restrictions.

Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer said “several” citations have been issued this month, with about eight warnings issued around Thanksgiving.

“We’ve written several (trucks) up for being overlength ... in the past week and a half,” Seilhamer said. “You could probably go out any day and issue them.”

A 10-ton weight limit was in effect for the road until November when a paving project by the state Department of Transportation was completed. The project stretched from the road’s intersection with Route 68 to Route 19.

A length restriction remains for Route 528, also known as Lindsay Road. Trailers and twin trailers over 42.5 feet and 102-inches wide are prohibited from using the road.

“It’s a tragedy waiting to happen,” Seilhamer said. “We still think allowing even these large triaxles in there is not a good idea.”

No accidents have been reported on the road involving commercial vehicles since the paving project was completed.

Part of the stipulations for the project was that the weight limit be lifted, which township officials, representatives from the Seneca Valley School District and local residents opposed.

One of the school district’s concerns was that school buses use the road for picking up and dropping off students.

Communications director Linda Andreassi said no difficulties have been experienced by the district’s transportation services as of this week.

PennDOT agreed this past summer to widen curves along multiple sections of the road.

Seilhamer, however, said that is not enough for the sharp curve near Ramsey Road.

He said tractor trailers and triaxles that travel toward Interstate 79 legally take the inside of the curve off the road.

“They’re driving off the paved portion and into the shoulder of the road, and it is spraying and dragging large quantities of mud onto 528,” Seilhamer said.

He said the wet, snowy weather could further exacerbate the situation and that the township police department contacted PennDOT about the matter.
