Virginia Ruth Betz Coffindaffer

Virginia Ruth Betz Coffindaffer, 100, of the Hopemont community in Terra Alta, W. Va., died Saturday at Mapleshire Hospice Care in Morgantown, W.Va.

The daughter of the late Iva V. Shawkey and Luther S. Betz, she was born Sept. 11, 1916, in Venus, Pa.

Virginia attended East Brady High School and Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where she was homecoming queen, president of Kappa Sigma Theta, and a member of the Heritage Society, Who's Who Among Students in American Universities during the 1936 to 1937 school year, and a member of the Campus Council and Women's Athletic Association. She also was secretary of the International Relations Club and maid of honor on the May Day Court.

Virginia then attended the Franklin School of Science and Art in Philadelphia, where she met her future husband, Taylor Coffindaffer, who she married in 1944.

She worked in a physician's office doing lab and X-ray work in Wilmington, Del., while her husband went on to serve in World War II with the U.S. Army medical services. They then moved to Kingwood, W.Va., Oakland, Md., and then Hopemont, W.Va., where both worked at the Hopemont Hospital for many years.

Virginia enjoyed oil painting, nature, and church and civic activities. She is remembered and loved for her generosity, community service, smile and positive outlook.

She is survived by her brother, Daryl L. Betz; her niece, Karen I. Betz; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Taylor Coffindaffer, in 1983.

COFFINDAFFER — Family and friends of Virginia Ruth Betz Coffindaffer, who died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, were received Monday at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta and will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services at 1 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Terra Alta with the Rev. Charles May officiating. Burial will follow at the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston, W.Va.Condolences may be made at www.arthurwrightfuneralhome.com.
