BUFFALO TWP— A Clearfield Township man is accused of fighting with two township police officers during a weekend altercation outside a convenience store.

Police eventually arrested the suspect, 45-year-old Brian S. Schuller, who was placed in the Butler County Prison on an unrelated warrant.

Schuller was arraigned Thursday on felony assault and other charges stemming from his tussle with police shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday at the BP Fueland on Ekastown Road.

An employee called for police after the defendant showed up at the store acting suspiciously, according to court documents.

While questioning the suspect, officer Jeffrey Sneddon learned that he was wanted on a bench warrant. Sneddon tried to place Schuller in handcuffs but the defendant swung his body toward the officer and then swung a fist at him, police said.

The punch apparently did not land, but Sneddon’s counter punch connected to the side of Schuller’s face. The officer took the suspect to the floor.

But that didn’t stop Schuller, documents said. He continued to scuffle with police even after officer Scott Hess arrived to help. The suspect is accused of scuffling with both officers.

Schuller was eventually placed in the back of a patrol car. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor bumps and bruises he got in the scuffle.

Following his release from the hospital, he was placed in the county prison on the warrant, which was issued after he failed to appear for a court hearing in a 2013 misdemeanor assault case, court records showed.

While Schuller was being booked into the prison, a guard found a suspected drug-inhaling straw in one of his pants pockets.

Police in their criminal complaint also noted that the defendant had driven to the store that night in a van without the owner’s permission.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Schuller on his latest charges — aggravated assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia, unauthorized use of a vehicle and public drunkenness.

He is being held in the county prison on $25,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 4 at Haggerty’s office in Saxonburg.
