A Butler man whose twin brother was fatally stabbed a decade ago was himself stabbed during a weekend altercation at his home, city police said.

Ronald Lee Schaeffer, 40, received about a dozen stitches for his knife wound in the Saturday night attack.

Police later arrested the suspect, 28-year-old John P. Conley III, at a Butler Township hotel but not before he allegedly assaulted an officer and a police dog.

Conley, who police say is homeless, is being held in the Butler County Prison on $250,000 bail.

Officers were called about 8 p.m. to Schaeffer's home in the 300 block of Fairvew Avenue for a man reportedly stabbed. They found the wounded victim there, said police Deputy Chief David Adam.

Schaeffer told investigators that he was at his home with his ex-girlfriend, Lois Daniels, 26, who is homeless, when he heard a knock at the door. His 15-year-old son opened the door.

“(The victim) advised that Conley burst in with a knife in hand and saying, “I'm going to kill you,'” Adam said.

The two men tussled during which the suspect swung his knife, stabbing Schaeffer in the upper back left arm.

Conley fled with Daniels and Schaeffer was later taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. He needed 10 to 15 stitches to close his wound, Adam said.

Police later learned that the defendant was at the Super 8 motel on Route 8 south in Butler Township and was willing to surrender.

But after city officers got there and placed him in handcuffs, Adam said, he began “kicking and thrashing.” Police Sgt. David Villotti injured his hand in the scuffle.

Conley is also accused of kicking the department's K-9 officer Blade, which Villotti handles as part of his duties. The dog was not hurt.

Additonally, police said he kicked at the windows of a cruiser after being placed in the back seat. Adam said an officer had to Taser him before he stopped acting up.

A search of Conley turned up a 3½-inch folding knife that police believed he used to stab Schaeffer.

The defendant, who already had facial injuries from an unrelated assault earlier that day, was taken to Butler Memorial for treatment before being placed in the county prison.

He is charged with aggravated assault, attempted burglary, aggravated assault of a police officer and taunting a police dog.

This is not the first time Conley has been charged in a knife attack.

He pleaded guilty last year to stabbing a 34-year-old man during a fight in the 200 block of North Elm Street on April 2, 2014. The victim was treated at Butler hospital for a stab wound to his upper back and later released.

Police charged Conley with attempted murder and aggravated assault but he eventually pleaded guilty to lesser charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment and terroristic threats.

He was sentenced to 11½ to 23½ months in the county prison followed by two years of probation, court records showed.

A jury eventually found Levi Hayes guilty of involuntary manslaughter — but not guilty of murder — in the deadly stabbing Sept. 19, 2006.

Donald Schaeffer, who was 30, died of two knife wounds to the heart.

Prosecutors said Hayes, then 50, stabbed the younger man with a folding knife during a fight at the victim's home on Virginia Avenue home.

Hayes at this trial testifed that he acted in self-defense.

Ronald Schaeffer spoke of the senselessness of the crime at the defendant's sentencing hearing. Hayes was given 22 to 60 months in state prison.
