Joseph L. Sepich

Joseph L. Sepich

Joseph L. Sepich, 90, of Cabot, went home to his Lord on Tuesday at his home.

Joe was born Dec. 15, 1925, in West Winfield, at home, with the help of a midwife. Weighing in at less than 2 pounds, he was the first child of five children to Joseph and Anna Sepich.

Surviving the child birth, he then grew up during the Great Depression. Of that he would always say, “You didn't know how poor you were because everybody else was in the same boat.”

A decent baseball player in the day, he was soon followed by his brothers, Bill and Johnny.

World War II would soon change his life, as it did most of his generation, with Joe serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he came home to marry his childhood sweetheart, Helen Weleski, in 1947.

He started his professional life at Penn Dixie Cement, where he worked for 48 years until his retirement in 1987. Most would remember him for his accordion skills in his band “Joe Sepich and the Twilight Serenaders” which he performed at local dances, halls and for many of those being married in the Butler County area from 1947 to 1974. “Once my band mates started to pass, my heart wasn't in it anymore.”

Joe cheated death at child birth in 1925, the Great Depression in 1933, World War II in 1944, asthma so bad that he spent weeks in an oxygen tent with only a new miracle drug to save his life in 1950, and a pacemaker in 1990. Joe has finally succumbed to Father Time to join his friends, band mates, loved ones and the love of his life, Helen, who he lost July 29, 2015, after 67 years of marriage; he never recovered. Rest in peace, Mom and Dad. Love you always, your legacy.

Surviving are his children, Jerry (Nancy) Sepich of Saxonburg, Shirley (David) Black of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Carol (Ron) Kennedy of Cabot, Joe (Diane) Sepich Jr. of Saxonburg and Marlene (Ron) Acre of Cabot; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, William (Brenda) Sepich of Saxonburg; and one sister, Mildred (Howard) Coller of Cabot.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen L. Sepich; his daughter-in-law, Linda Sepich; one sister, Mary Lubatti; and one brother, John Sepich.
