SRU's Hinderliter Freshman of WeekSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University women's basketball guard Brooke Hinderliter has been named PSAC West Freshman of the Week.Hinderliter averaged 10.5 points, 2.5 assists and 2,5 steals per game in the Ashland (Ohio) Thanksgiving Classic over the weekend.This is the second time this season Hinderliter has received the weekly freshman award.

Freeport's DeJidas in softball eventFREEPORT — Freeport's Ally DeJidas has been invited to participate in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North, a fastpitch softball showcase event in Akron, Ohio, this weekend.DeJidas is a first baseman-outfielder who plays summer ball for the Pittsburgh Predators' 16-under team. She was also one of only 25 athletes chosen to participate in the “cage animal” sector of the showcase.Now in its 21st season, the QDSN attracts athletes from 21 states and two Canadian provinces.

Oregon fires grid coach HelfrichUNDATED — Oregon has fired coach Mark Helfrich after a disappointing 4-8 season, and just two years after getting the Ducks within a victory of the program’s first national championship.Helfrich was head coach of the Ducks for four seasons, leading the team to the first College Football Playoff championship game after the 2014 season. But Oregon faltered this year with a five-game losing streak, and finished at the bottom of the Pac-12 North with just two conference wins.

Sharper receives 20-year sentenceLOS ANGELES — Former NFL star Darren Sharper was sentenced to a 20-year prison term, ending a tour of shame and punishment in the courthouse where he first admitted drugging and raping women in four states.
