A quick-thinking woman may have averted disaster this morning when she used a garden hose to put out a garage fire at her home in Buffalo Township.

"They are very, very lucky," Chief Matt Cypher of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department said of the homeowners, Mr. and Mrs. John Osche.

Osche's wife was able to put out the fire that started shortly before 7 a.m. in one of two garage stalls at the couple's home on Cubbage Road. No one was hurt.

Fire officials suspect an electrical problem, possibly in a power saw cord, started the fire. Damage was estimated at several thousand dollars.

Osche was out hunting on the first day of deer rifle season when his wife spotted smoke and flames coming from the garage, authorities said. She wasted little time, grabbing a hose and dousing the blaze.

The fire apparently started in a corner of the garage where a radial arm saw and saw dust box sat, Cypher said. The saw was not on but he speculated that a pinch in the cord possibly still held electrical current and may have overheated.

The blaze was out by the time firefighters got there.

Crews pulled out the damaged saw and saw dust box, and later ventilated the garage and inspected the structure to make sure the fire was not hiding in the walls or insulation.

"The dry wall ceiling helped contain the fire to the garage," Cypher noted.

About two dozen firefighters from Buffalo, Saxonburg and Sarver responded to the call.
