ZELIENOPLE — After calling Milton Street home for 19 years, Jim and Vicky Buzard’s annual Christmas display will move to the community park.

Starting Thanksgiving Day at 5 p.m., people can see the shadow box display that attracts between 60,000 and 80,000 people, according to creator Jim Buzard.

“Hopefully it will be more,” Buzard said of the number of people.

The display, will be lit until 11 p.m. Thanksgiving night. From there, it will be lit nightly until Jan. 1, 2017.

Buzard said the display was moved to the park because it was easier for him.

“I’m getting older and can’t do all the work,” he said.

The display was pre-assembled this year and stored in a hangar at the Zelienople Municipal Airport. Forklifts were used to transport the display to the park.

Buzard said the display takes about a month to set up from scratch.

“That saved a lot of time,” he said of using the airport.

Parks board member Jen Semel said the benefit of the display’s new setting is it helps make the park a “four-season venue.”

“We don’t want it to be just spring, summer and a little bit of fall,” Semel said. “We want people to be at the park all year around.”

While the Buzards will manage the display this year, Semel said management may be transferred to the park in the future.

“I’ve shared this event on Facebook,” she said. “I’m surprised how many reactions it gets.”

Semel also said the display is a “springboard” to more attractions and activities during winter months.

“This is the beginning of probably a bigger Christmas and holiday celebration,” Semel said. “We see an opportunity to have something really great for the holidays.”

One feature of the animated display is Santa Claus writing a list in a den setting. A camera in the setting allows passers-by to see themselves on a television monitor in the room.

Other parts of the display feature Santa and Mrs. Claus, a church, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and “Winnie the Pooh” characters, among others.

Buzard said he got the idea for the display after seeing them at retail stores over the years.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “Generations of kids have came. People would bring their children. Now, the children bring their children.”
